First Month of School
By Jennifer Perez Ruiz
The first month of school has been very different from past years at WMU. With a new eight-period schedule, students have mixed feelings about the way the school day progresses. Still, students are able to make the most of it. However, most students don’t like the idea of having a no phone policy, and are very adamant about keeping them on their person. So far, with these changes there have been several mixed opinions, but nonetheless with safety precautions and education put in mind, for administrators it seems like the best option for the school.

September Activities Recap
By Kellee Milks
During the month of September we have had many school activities.
Volleyball had beaten Louisa-Muscatine 3-0, Pekin 3-1, Waco 3-0 but had a bad game against Wapello, losing 0-3. They played their conference tournament on September 26, they played Central Lee, Lone Tree, and West Burlington. They lost to Central Lee 1-2 and West Burlington 0-2, but they beat Lone Tree 2-1.
The WMU football team kicked off their season by beating Central City (40-28) and New London (68-32). We then fell to WACO (24-40) and Montezuma (14-55); however, the team overcame English Valleys to win 60-18 on September 27.
Cross country participated in many meets this past month, running at Hillcrest, Van Buren, Fairfield, Central Lee, Ft. Madison, and Mt. Pleasant. On September 17 at Central Lee, Kohlby Newsom placed 2nd, Jacob Nelson placed 14th, and Bowen Thomson placed 15th.

In September, two students in FFA went to a soil judging competition. As a team, they placed 31st, which is a good placement considering two students represented WMU in a competition that otherwise hosts teams of 4. At the end of August, FFA students also participated in State Livestock Judging. The team placed as a Silver Team, placing 27th overall out of 47 teams.
Homecoming 2024 took place the week of September 16. The 2024 homecoming court was Sheaden Adams, Sinjin Brown, Jake Edwards, Kohlby Newsom, Josie Nelson, Summer Neubauer, Pacey Schlee, and Rachel Tapia. Sophia Boschi was an honorary court member, and the junior royalty members were Celia Malone and Henry Schinstock. Cooper Buffington and Olivia Martinez were voted the king and queen. Homecoming dress up days included 80s/90s day and celebrity/character day.

Art Club
Art Club had a booth at the Washington Farmers Market on Thursday, September 19th to provide an art experience for all ages! All free will donations are going to their Spring Field Trip to the St. Louis Art Museum! They plan to be back at the Washington Farmers Market again on Thursday, October 10th for their LAST market!

WMU Dance & Cheer Team
By Kassydee Newsom
To start the year, we have the new cheer team of WMU created by the already established drill team. As of the end of September, they have already cheered at four games, including one at WACO, with one more to go. Although it’s a new experience for these Lady Wolves, they are having a blast cheering for their team!
On another note they are still the drill team and have performed their yearly Homecoming Routine. They performed at Boom Night and the last pep assembly on September 20th, before the big football game and homecoming dance! Their dance included a mix of three different beloved show theme songs which included The Nanny, Friends, and The Office. Stay tuned for upcoming performances by the drill team!
When was the first school in Winfield established and where was it located?
The first school was a log cabin school house on the Crooked Creek in 1848.
